The UK arm of brewing giant AB InBev has sought to downplay the significance of a winding-up petition filed against it by leading crop and grain merchant Frontier Agriculture.

Frontier, a 50-50 JV between Associated British Foods and US food giant Cargill, filed for court proceedings against AB InBev UK limited – the legal name for Budweiser Brewing Group (BBG) in the UK – last week.

It is not yet clear why the British agri firm has taken the move. A winding-up petition is a serious legal action typically filed as a last resort by a creditor to force a company into compulsory liquidation over the non-payment of debts.

Approached for comment, a spokesman for BBG said the supplier was “working to resolve the matter as a priority” and expected the petition to be “withdrawn soon”.

It was expected to have no impact on BBG’s operations, the spokesman added.

Frontier Agriculture, meanwhile, described the winding-up petition as relating to “a commercial matter and ongoing legal proceedings, which we expect to be resolved soon”.

ABF describes Frontier Agriculture as “the leading provider of grain marketing and crop production services to customers in the UK”.

Its services include supplying “seed, crop protection products and fertiliser to farmers, as well as providing specialist agronomy advice”.

In the year to 30 June 2025, turnover at the company dipped from £1.76bn to £1.72bn, while profits before tax fell from £40m to just £9.6m.

The results followed a year marked by low prices and a smaller domestic crop, Frontier said in January.

In the year to 31 December 2024, its sales climbed less than 1% to £1.67bn.

Profits before tax, meanwhile, crashed 71.0% to £20.9m, marking a fifth consecutive year in the red for the brewer.

Earlier this month, BBG confirmed its CEO Brian Perkins had departed to take up a new role at AB InBev. He has since been confirmed as president of its Labatt Breweries of Canada unit.

Perkins’ replacement has not yet been confirmed by BBG.
