Carrefour is boosting its Spanish operations with a 1.2bn euro investment just weeks after Dutch rival Ahold revealed it too was planning to take a bigger slice of the market.
The four year plan will see Carrefour double its portfolio of hypermarkets to 240. And following the merger with Promodès all stores will be rebranded under a single name: Carrefour Espana.
It is investing heavily in offering services such as petrol retailing and travel agency services, as well as boosting the number of instore restaurants and optical centres. The group predicts 10,000 new jobs will be created by the expansion programme.
