Co-op Wholesale removed the levy for retailers across England, Scotland and Wales in January

Co-op Wholesale has cut its fuel levy for independent retailers across Northern Ireland, effective from today (1 September).

The move follows the wholesaler’s decision to ditch the levy for retailers operating across England, Scotland and Wales in January.

Co-op Wholesale – formerly known as Nisa – said it reflected its recognition of the economic pressures on local businesses, and emphasised its long-term commitment to delivering value.

“Our Northern Ireland customers are a vital part of our retail portfolio,” said Co-op Wholesale MD Katie Secretan.

“While we acknowledge that our service levels have not met expectations in recent months, this decision goes beyond financial relief – it’s a clear signal of our focus and enduring commitment to these retailers. We’re determined to rebuild trust and deliver the service our retailers deserve.”

The removal of the levies is part of a broader strategy to enhance support for independent retailers and ensure they remain competitive and financially resilient in a challenging market, according to Co-op Wholesale.

It said it would continue to monitor the economic landscape and work at pace to resolve product availability issues.

The levy position will be reviewed ahead of the start of 2026.
