Scottish food retailers are having a tight year, according to the latest monthly Scottish Retail Consortium sales monitor.
Director Fiona Moriarty said food sales and margins were suffering due to intense competition. She said: “We don’t expect these figures to grow much in the coming months.”
The SRC said food retailers’ sales rose 0.3% in May, year-on-year. Total sales increased 3.0% year-on-year but the underlying trend in food retail sales growth had been down all year. However, the SRC sales monitor for May said limited price inflation indicated volumes might be better than suggested by the figures.
There were strong beer sales for the Scottish cup final and many retailers had record lottery sales and spin-off turnover for the triple rollover.
Scottish like-for-like retail sales overall grew 4.8% in May compared to 1.6% in April. Total sales grew 7.3%, up from 4.4% the previous month.
