Convenience retailers enjoyed record-breaking sales during May and June’s heatwaves, new data shows.
The sector’s sales were boosted by £30m in May, with June’s hot weather fuelling a further spike, according to specialist convenience insight agency Talysis. The soft drinks and ice cream categories both broke their sales records.
Soft drinks hit two all-time highs in the space of four weeks, first at £105m over the Bank Holiday week ending 31 May, and then at £114m in the week ending 27 June. The sales boost spanned all main subcategories of soft drinks, including water, carbonates, energy, juice and smoothies, according to Talysis
The ice cream category also broke its value sales record twice, once in the week ending 31 May, at £14.8m, and again last week, at £18.2m – 56% up on the same week last year.
“The great British summer this year presents a major and much-needed opportunity for the UK’s independent convenience sector,” said Talysis MD Ed Roberts.
“As our insights have shown, hotter weather, either a heatwave or simply ‘above average’ temperatures, delivers significant sales increases in the channel. Coupled with the World Cup, Wimbledon and other high-profile sporting events, it’s exactly what the sector needs.
“Although the latest heatwave is now over, there’s another one predicted soon. Retailers need to grab every opportunity they can to demonstrate their convenience now, so that shoppers remember them during the tougher months.
“Stock up on the key categories to maximise availability, make sure relevant SKUs are chilled, and communicate effectively to your customers and potential customers.”
