Spanish brewer Damm has added a gluten-free, alcohol-free lager to its lineup.
The new brew, Daura 0.0%, has landed in Tesco stores ahead of a wider nationwide rollout (rsp: £5/4x330ml).
The 17 IBU lager is “clean and intense in aroma, [with] delicate floral tones”, according to Damm. It promises “subtle cereal and toasted notes with a smooth texture and a well-balanced bitterness”.
“We know from consumer insight that there is demand for beers that work for people managing dietary requirements as well as those moderating their alcohol intake,” said Luke White, Damm UK MD.
Rather than substituting gluten-containing grains with alternatives, Damm claims to have developed a proprietary enzymatic process (enzymatic hydrolysation and protein precipitation) that breaks down gluten’s molecular chain while preserving the beer’s character.
The alcohol is then removed by advanced vacuum distillation.
Every batch of Daura 0.0% is independently tested and certified by the Spanish National Research Council to ensure gluten levels are suitable for coeliacs.
“Daura 0.0% brings a world-class, certified gluten-free lager… to the alcohol-free offering for the first time,” said White. “We’re delighted to be launching it exclusively with Tesco, a partner that shares our passion for these niches.”
Despite Damm opening its first overseas brewery in Bedford in October last year to meet “increased UK demand”, Daura 0.0% will be brewed in Spain and imported to the UK.
