Prices of festive bakery treats have risen by as much as a third this year.
A raft of branded and own-label mince pies, Christmas cake, stollen, yule logs and panettone are more expensive in the supermarkets than they were in 2021, research by The Grocer using Assosia data reveals [52 w/e 21 November 2022].
Sainsbury’s Classic Panettone has risen in price by 33.3%, from £1.50 to £2, the data shows. Asda Extra Special Luxury Yule Log, meanwhile, is up 28.6% from £3.50 to £4.50.
The price of Morrisons Mince Pies six-pack has risen by 26.3% from 99p to £1.25. Baker Street Marzipan Stollen 200g, meanwhile, has risen in price by 13.3% in Asda, from £1.50 to £1.70. The brand’s Stollen Bites 275g are up 16.7% in Tesco, from £3 to £3.50.
A spokeswoman for Sainsbury’s said it was “committed to offering our customers great choice and value when they shop with us”.
“We continue to work hard to keep prices low and just one of the ways we’re doing this is our Weekly Christmas Cracker deals… Customers can also find a Christmas pudding for as little as £1, as well as other festive treats including our fruit & nut stollen and iced fruit cake which remain the same price as last year.”
A Morrisons spokeswoman said it was “working hard to keep prices down” amid “an unprecedented period of inflation”.
The Grocer has approached Asda, Tesco and Baker Street for comment.
It comes as 66% of shoppers are planning to cut their food and drink spend in the run-up to Christmas this year, an exclusive YouGov Survey Direct polling for The Grocer has revealed.
Almost half of the 1,000 big four shoppers surveyed (44%) intend to spend less on snacks, confectionery and party food, the data shows.
Asda and Tesco have both introduced bargain Christmas Dinner offers, which feed a family for under £25.
