Altis Greek olive oil
Launched: June 2010
The number one Greek olive oil brand is trying to break into the UK market. Managing director Savvas Papachristou believes Greek oil is grossly under-represented in the UK, despite the country being the third-largest producer.

The brand (rsp: £6.59 for one litre of extra virgin olive oil) has gained listings in Welsh supermarket chain Filco and is also stocked in delis across the UK. Papachristou is aiming to get listings with the major multiples within six to 12 months. The brand is targeting the premium end of the market with a variety of pack sizes.

Flora spray oil
Launched: July 2009 The UK's largest spread brand launched an oil spray last year (rsp: £1.89). The product has performed well, says marketing director Neil Brownbill, because consumers associate Flora and low-calorie spray oils with health.

"We believe the role of a spray oil is portion control," he says. Spray oils are a £4m category and Brownbill claims Flora spray oil now accounts for 10% of the market. Others have not performed so well and Brownbill admits both Crisp 'n Dry spray and Napolina spray, launched at the same time, are under review.

Pura Organics
Launched: January 2010
While acknowledging that organic oil remains a niche market, brand owner Princes believes that this product broadens the appeal by introducing a more affordable option. Pura Organics was the first range of organic seed oils to hit the British market, andis certified by the Soil Association. The range, which was launched in January, includes organic rapeseed and sunflower oils in PET bottles (rsp: £1.49 for 500ml). The products feature the strapline "cooking with nature", and are suitable for all types of cooking, including frying, roasting, grilling and basting.

Filippo Berio
Launched: June 2010
The UK's number one olive oil brand has done very little to alter its packaging since it launched in 1867. But this year the brand has decided to put its oils in taller, tapered, thinner bottles, which started rolling out last month. Managing director Walter Zanré believes the new bottle communicates "everyday elegance and appeal".

The company hopes the bottle will give it a greater presence and visibility. It also gives the impression of a larger bottle. The new bottles (rsp: £3.26 for 500ml extra virgin olive oil) are embossed with Filippo Berio on the side, to enhance the premium quality cues.
