Sales of skin, hair and hydration products are set to grow as GLP-1 users look to mitigate unwanted side effects.
According to research with 497 users of the skinny jabs in the UK, US, Germany and Sweden, 79% reported side effects, including 25% who noted changes to their skin, 21% hair loss or dryness, and 48% digestive problems.
An estimated two million British adults are now using GLP-1 injections, and the number of weight-loss drug users is set to further increase after the Wegovy tablets were approved by UK medical regulators this week.
While users spend around £480 less on food each year, and the contents of their basket changes, Strat7 found growing consumer interest in products that could help with hair and skin health, driven by the physical effects associated with rapid weight loss, as well as hydration support.
“The impact of GLP-1 extends well beyond food and beverage, creating a broader set of adjacent health and wellness opportunities,” said Claire Jennings, a director at Strat7 Incite. “This is evolving into a much broader wellness ecosystem opportunity, not just a change in eating behaviour.”
Jennings said the strongest growth areas came from vitamins, probiotics, digest health and skincare products, as users took a proactive and combined approach to health, nutrition and appearance.
Users said the most valuable advice from doctors was on how to stay hydrated during treatment. Two-in-five users were given specific advice and 71% said they were more aware of staying well hydrated since starting treatment.
“Side effects aren’t isolated cases,” said Jennings. “Nearly 80% of users report experiencing some form of side effect, and for a meaningful proportion, those effects are considered severe.
“As a result, we’re seeing new demand emerge around digestive comfort and gut support, hydration and electrolyte balance, energy and nutritional support, as well as beauty and personal care solutions linked to hair and skin health.”
