Plant-based ingredients supplier Howtian has unveiled SoPure Dentivia, a stevia-based sweetener for oral care products.
Designed for use in toothpaste and mouthwash, SoPure Dentivia would help oral care brands “improve sweetness quality, mouthfeel, and breath freshness”, said Howtian. The innovation would also support “the growing move toward plant-derived, naturally sourced ingredients free from artificial sweeteners and masking agents”.
Unlike food-grade stevia, SoPure Dentivia is optimised to perform in complex toothpaste and mouthwash matrices, where the likes of essential oils can negatively affect taste and mouthfeel.
And unlike commonly used sweeteners such as saccharin and xylitol, SoPure Dentivia would not “leave lingering bitterness, metallic notes or tingling sensations” when combined with fluoride, preservatives, cooling agents or antibacterial compounds, Howtian said. It had been created to also “meet the unique technical demands of oral care applications, where flavour balance, foam quality and aftertaste are critical to consumer acceptance”.
SoPure Dentivia is now available globally. In toothpaste, it could “enhance sweetness, support foaming performance, mask bitterness and maintain long-lasting freshness”, the US supplier added. In mouthwash, the new formulation created “a clean, refreshing taste profile without excessive sweetness, while masking odours from essential oils such as eucalyptol, thymol, menthol and methyl salicylate”.
Summer Song, Howtian senior research scientist for home & personal care, said: “Many oral care systems still rely on saccharin or synthetic masking agents that can leave lingering bitterness or tingling sensations.
“With SoPure Dentivia, we developed a stevia solution specifically for oral care matrices. It delivers clean, natural sweetness while helping reduce harsh sensory effects from fluoride, preservatives, and antibacterial actives.”
Makers of oral hygiene products wanted “plant-derived ingredients, but they also need performance”, Song added. “Dentivia was designed to provide both, improving taste, mouthfeel and freshness without relying on artificial sweeteners or masking agents.”
