KFC has supplied the equivalent of five million meals nationwide since launching its food redistribution partnership with FareShare in 2021.
Through the collaboration, surplus chicken from KFC restaurants is frozen and redistributed to more than 1,300 charity partners nationwide.
It comes as data from the Department for Work and Pensions found 7.5 million people across the UK are now experiencing food insecurity.
Despite food donations peaking during the traditionally busy festive season, supplies of donated food to support ongoing stocks of surplus are expected to dip this new year, according to FareShare.
“Working with FareShare to deliver five million meals across the UK is a proud moment for everyone at KFC – but what really matters is what those meals mean on the ground,” said KFC UK&I food and quality director Jo Tivers, following an event today (23 January) at FareShare’s Liverpool kitchen.
“Meeting the local volunteers today really brought that home. Their dedication, day in and day out, is incredible and they shouldn’t be left worrying about where the next delivery of food will come from.
”By donating our surplus chicken, we’re making sure good-quality protein doesn’t go to waste and can instead feed people who need it most. We know there’s more to do, and we’d love to see more businesses step up and make a difference.”
FareShare and The Felix Project CEO Charlotte Hill added: “The chicken we receive from KFC is a brilliant source of protein and for the charities we support it is hugely important in helping them provide people with balanced meals.
“As we move into a new phase, merging FareShare and The Felix Project to become a more ambitious charity with greater national impact, we look forward to continuing to work closely with KFC, to get more good food to people and communities in need.”
