KP Snacks makes Hula Hoops and McCoy’s crisps in Billingham

Hula Hoops, McCoy’s and Pom-Bears could soon be absent from Christmas party buffets as workers at KP Snacks’ Billingham site prepare to strike.

According to GMB Union, 85% of process operatives at the site have voted for industrial action after the company imposed additional duties and responsibilities without any increase in pay.

Bosses have now halted all holiday requests while the company evaluates the potential impact of industrial action, in “what looks like a punitive measure”, said GMB Union.

The union said it was seeking legal advice on whether this decision was lawful, as members meet to discuss strike dates.

“GMB members at KP are skilled workers essential to the production of crisps and snacks,” said GMB organiser Paul Clark.

“Their expertise keeps operations running smoothly and supermarket shelves stocked, yet they are being asked to do additional work for the same pay.

“If they’ve been asked to do extra work, they should get more pay… They will not stand by while their workload increases without recognition,” Clark added.

When approached by The Grocer, a spokeswoman for KP Snacks said: “We are disappointed by the outcome of this ballot, which involves a small number of our colleagues at Teesside, and we remain in ongoing discussions with them and the GMB.

“We value the Teesside team and the important role they play in producing our products and remain committed to constructive dialogue to find a resolution.

“In the meantime, robust contingency plans are in place to minimise disruption and ensure continuity of supply.’’

Industrial action at KP Snacks’ Leicestershire factory threatened supermarket shortages of Skips and Hula Hoops last Christmas.
