Strub took charge ‘at a challenging time… but with lots for the wine merchant to look forward to’ said Direct Wines

Laithwaites Wine owner Direct Wines has appointed Philippa Strub as its new CEO.

Strub is to take on the role following the retirement of incumbent David Gates. She is currently Direct Wines’ UK MD, a role she has held since 2018.

Strub took charge “at a challenging time for the industry but with lots for the wine merchant to look forward to”, said Direct Wines.

“As a family-owned business we have the privilege and opportunity of taking a long-term view of how wine and wine-selling needs to adapt to changes in customer and government behaviour”, said Strub. “I’m really up for that challenge and believe I have the team to drive the change we need to see.”

Direct Wines chair Will Laithwaite thanked Gates “for bringing world-class brand thinking to the business as well as championing a successful programme of talent development”.

“Philippa’s track record is exemplary, she’s very much a proven winner and we’re excited to see how she makes the most of this new suite of responsibilities,” he added.

Direct Wines was established in 1969 by Tony Laithwaite and sells direct to consumers in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, with franchises in select other markets.
