Lidl has expanded its scan & shop service to 37 more stores, taking the total to 44.
The service, called Lidl & Go, means customers can scan items with a smartphone as they put them in their shopping basket.
It was made available to the public for the first time in seven stores in May this year, as revealed by The Grocer at the time, following a ‘friends and family’ pilot which began last year.
The latest phased rollout will reach stores in Scotland, the south east and the wider south of England throughout July.
Shoppers will be able to use the Lidl Plus app to scan items as they pick them from shelf, tracking their spend as they go. To complete their purchase and pay, customers only have to scan the app at a self-checkout. Terms and conditions in the app say their shopping may also undergo a “quick rescan by a colleague”.
“The early response from the initial phase of Lidl & Go has been really encouraging,” said Lidl GB chief customer officer Louise Weise.
“Customers are telling us they value the control and visibility it gives them over their spend, and the flexibility to shop at their own pace.
“This next wave of stores brings the feature to many more customers, and we’ll continue to take on board feedback to evolve the offering as we go.”

Lidl said the rollout was part of its investment in digital innovation to make shopping easier and more convenient, while ensuring traditional payment methods and staffed tills remain available across stores.
The discounter has increased investment in loyalty rewards by 60% this year, and added points to the Lidl Plus app in May, alongside coupons.
