M&S Food has opened a new, bigger store at Heathrow, replacing two smaller pilot units that opened last year.
The new airside store at Terminal 5 is in a more prime location, at the entrance to the departure lounge. It replaces pilot stores located at Gates A and B, and is almost double their size.
The new, permanent store features more of the M&S Food range, including sandwiches, salads, sushi and bakery, according to the retailer.
M&S said the investment reflected its convenience growth strategy, focused on opening in high-footfall locations. By expanding in travel hubs, the retailer wants to broaden the food business’s market beyond traditional shopping missions.
“Our food growth strategy is about making M&S more relevant, more often wherever customers are shopping,” said M&S Food MD Alex Freudmann.
“Heathrow has shown the opportunity to bring our fresh food, food on the move and much-loved M&S gifting range into new locations and customer missions.
“After a successful first year airside, this bigger store brings an in-store bakery with freshly baked products throughout the day, alongside customer favourites like picky bits, giving us even more confidence in the role travel locations can play as we continue to grow the convenience arm of the food business.”
Heathrow chief customer officer Ross Baker said: “We aspire to make every journey better, and that includes providing a great range of convenient, high-quality food and drink options.
“Our partnership with M&S plays an important role in delivering that. As one of the UK’s most trusted and well-loved brands, M&S has proved hugely popular with our passengers, and we’re delighted to welcome a permanent M&S Food store to T5, offering even greater choice and convenience.”
