M&S has hired Alex Doorey, formerly of energy supplier Ovo, as its new corporate affairs director.

Doorey was Ovo’s VP of corporate affairs, brand and marketing, and before that held senior roles in communications at Virgin Media O2, eBay and Sainsbury’s.

Early in her career she worked in politics, including at the Conservative Campaign Headquarters as media advisor and then chief of staff.

At M&S she will join Lucy Reynolds, who leads external communications, and Adam Hawksbee, who leads the government and public affairs agenda.

Like all senior M&S hires, Doorey will spend her first four weeks working in stores and depots to gain hands-on knowledge of day-to-day operations.

Jon Church, who has been M&S’s interim corporate affairs director since November, will stay on for a handover period during her induction.

Announcing the appointment on LinkedIn, M&S CEO Stuart Machin thanked Church for his “hard work and tremendous support” and said the retailer was “excited to welcome Alex to the team”.

Doorey said: “I am thrilled to be joining Stuart Machin and the team at M&S.

“M&S is the UK’s most loved brand for a reason – it has a clear purpose, outstanding product, and a strong customer focus.

“I look forward to meeting colleagues as I begin my work in stores and depots in March.”
