M&S has appointed Thinus Keeve to the newly created role of retail director.

Thinus’s experience includes 12 years in senior roles at Coles in Australia, where M&S CEO Stuart Machin and Food MD Alex Freudmann both previously worked.

M&S said Thinus would take charge of M&S stores in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, as well as central store operations.

He will report to operations director Sacha Berendji, who will retain overall responsibility for retail, property, security and business continuity. Berendji also has responsibility for M&S’s store rotation programme.

Keeve is due to join the business in early June, Retail Week was first to report.

M&S said that, as with all all new senior leaders, he would spend his first month working in stores, getting close to staff and close to customers. He is then due to join the executive team in July.

His appointment comes as M&S continues to grapple with a cyberattack that has wrought havoc on its operations since Easter, forcing it to suspend online clothing & home orders.

The retailer said last week that online clothing & home orders would remain disrupted until July as it rebuilt IT systems following the cyberattack. It has estimated it will lead to a £300m hit for group operating profit this financial year.
