Nestlé has recalled a swathe of SMA infant and follow-on formula products that may contain cereulide toxin.
Cereulide is a toxin produced by some strains of Bacillus cereus. It is highly heat-stable, meaning it is unlikely to be deactivated or destroyed by cooking, using boiling water or when making the infant milk.
If consumed, cereulide can lead to rapid onset of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps.

The FSA has urged shoppers not to feed the above products to babies, even if they have not yet shown symptoms after consuming them. If the formula was prescribed by a health professional, they should consult a pharmacist or other medical professional before changing formula, the FSA has advised.
Shoppers who have bought one of the impacted products should share a photo of it, including the batch code via https://www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch or call the careline on 0800 081 8180 for a refund. Batch codes can be found on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas or the base of the outer box and on the side or top of the container for ready-to-feed formulas.
Point-of-sale notices will be displayed in all stockists. They explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products.
A ‘precautionary’ measure
“Following the detection of a quality issue with an ingredient provided by a leading supplier, Nestlé has undertaken testing of all arachidonic acid (ARA) oil and corresponding oil mixes used in the production of potentially impacted infant nutrition products,” a Nestlé spokeswoman told The Grocer.
“No illnesses have been confirmed in connection with the products involved to date.
“The company is in contact with UK authorities and as a precautionary measure, is voluntarily recalling specific batches of its SMA infant formula and follow-on formula.
“Nestlé assures parents and caregivers that it is implementing appropriate actions to safeguard the health and wellbeing of families and their babies.
“At the same time, the company is working to minimise any potential supply disruption.”
