Food sharing app Olio has marked its 10th anniversary with a landmark of providing 120 million meals to communities.

The app, which began as a neighbour-to-neighbour food sharing app available in a few north London postcodes, now has partnerships with a raft of supermarkets and other food companies including the likes of Tesco, Iceland, Asda, Boots, Amazon Fresh, Holland & Barrett and Compass.

Founded in 2015 by Tessa Clarke and Saasha Celestial-One, Olio is now operational in 60 countries and has 8.8 million users globally, with 4.5 million in the UK alone.

Olio connects businesses with volunteers from its network of 150,000 food safety trained volunteers, which it calls Food Waste Heroes. It said volunteers rescued food from 8,500 locations per month.

Christine Heffernan, chief communications & sustainability officer at Tesco, said: “At Tesco, we believe that no good food should ever go to waste. Partnering with Olio on our food surplus redistribution programme, Community Food Connection, remains integral to our mission, and we look forward to continuing this vital work with them in the years to come.”

Ashleigh Taylor, head of environment at Compass Group UK & Ireland, a major partner of Olio’s in the catering sector, said: “Olio has been a fantastic partner in our mission to reduce food waste. Olio’s platform is simple to use at site level and delivers a meaningful, positive impact in the local communities where we operate.”

“As we look back on the decade behind us and ahead to the one to come, we’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved – and we’ve never been more optimistic about Olio’s long-term potential,” said Celestial-One.
