The retro sweeties will roll into the supermarkets next month

Mars Wrigley is bringing back Opal Fruits in their original flavours for a limited time only.

The launch will see the return of the original strawberry, lemon, orange and lime flavours, delivered in a 138g pouch format.

They will roll into Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Tesco in May to tap the “growing popularity of fruity sweets in the summer months”.

Opal Fruits launched in 1960 and was rebranded as Starburst in 1998. This isn’t the first time Mars Wrigley has brought back the retro brand. It rolled out a limited run of the treats in 2020, returning them again for what it said was the “final time” in 2021.

Even so, Mars Wrigley stressed that this time a fixed volume would be produced, which, once sold, won’t be restocked.

Opal Fruits launched in 1960 and was rebranded as Starburst in 1998. With the rebrand, lemon and lime flavours were combined into one sweet, and a blackcurrant chew was added.

“The ’90s nostalgia trend continues to resonate strongly with consumers, and we are giving them the chance to reconnect with memories from that time,” said Skittles senior brand manager Florence McGivern.

“We are especially excited about this release as we continue to celebrate the rich heritage of an iconic brand,” McGivern added.

It comes after Mars Wrigley brought back the Marathon bar, which was renamed Snickers in 1990, for a limited time last year.
