Poundland has confirmed the location of another 12 stores set to close in a restructuring plan, bringing the total so far identified to 52.
They are among 68 stores set to close in a restructuring plan announced after Poundland’s sale by Pepco Group to investment firm Gordon Brothers in June.
Thirteen of the 68 have closed so far, including 10 on 10 August. Poundland also recently confirmed the location of 15 closing on 17 August and 12 that will cease trading on 24 August.
The variety discounter has now identified the next 12 set to close after that. Of the latest batch, 11 are closing on 31 August and one on 14 September.
It means Poundland has now confirmed the location of all but 16 of the 68 stores destined for closure.
Poundland remains tied to leases on closed stores until its restructuring plan receives approval from High Court and creditors, with a hearing due to take place on 26 August.
The retailer anticipates further closures over time as leases expire. It expects the estate to shrink from about 800 to between 650 and 700.
“When a store nearby closes, we understand how disappointing that is for customers, but nevertheless look forward to welcoming them to another Poundland store in the future,” said Poundland retail director Darren MacDonald.
He said affected staff had entered a formal consultation process which would explore any suitable alternative roles.
Staff at the latest 12 stores identified were briefed last week.
Poundland’s restructuring plan also includes removing frozen food from stores, halting online trading and retiring its Perks loyalty app, which rolled out across the UK last year.
Poundland’s frozen and digital distribution centre at Darton, South Yorkshire, is due to close this year, followed by its national distribution centre at Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026. Stores will be served from its other two distribution centres in Wigan and Harlow.
Gordon Brothers has agreed to invest £80m in the turnaround, having reportedly paid £1 to buy Poundland.
A recent trading update from Pepco Group revealed that between 1 April and the completion of the sale on 12 June, Poundland revenue fell 10.3% to €347m. Poundland’s like-for-like sales were down 7.1% in the same period.
At the same time the Poundland estate shrank by 19 stores, from 818 to 799.
Three of the 68 stores had already closed when Poundland announced its restructuring plan on 17 June. They were in Swiss Cottage (closed 20 April 2024), Chiswick (closed 28 May 2025), and Southampton West Quay (closed 9 June 2025).
