What are your greatest challenges and how do you tackle them?
Achieving results like this. We want to achieve, through teamwork, high levels of customer satisfaction and service within availability and make sure customers are able to get what they want. Availability is something we're working on and focused on. Through teamwork we hope to eradicate out of stocks.
What makes the store so successful?
The mix of experience of the partners we have within the branch. The whole team strives to make the store a success. We also have a fantastic location on the harbour in Portishead and there is a lot of building and development going on in the area. It is a growing area and a great catchment area for us.
What do you do in your spare time?
I play golf badly and spend a lot of time with my two sons. I also coach an under 11's football team.
What is the best thing about being a duty manager?
Working with so many different partners and customers. Every day is different and you never know what's going to happen from one day to the next. I love the challenges I get from the job and from working with so many different people.
What are your plans for the store?
We have a new till system that will be implemented approximately halfway through this year. Last October we had a refit to change the layout of the store around a bit. Within that we got rid of the hot-food area, changed the chilled- drinks area and brought in some new fridges. We also had a pharmacy put into the store, which has been extremely well received by customers. We want to make Waitrose the best store in Portishead.
How did you get into retail?
I worked at McDonald's for ten years and they gave me a sabbatical. I used it as a period of reassessment and got a job with Safeway, which then sold the store to Waitrose when it was in the process of being bought out by Morrisons.
