Wrexham Lager Beer Co, the company co-owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has made its Canadian debut after securing partnerships with two of North America’s largest alcohol retailers.
The Welsh brewer has teamed up with British Columbia Liquor Stores to sell its Wrexham Lager in 92 BCLS locations (6x330ml format) and several licensed retail stores in single 330ml and 500ml cans.
The brand’s 500ml single cans have also been listed across the province of Ontario, as part of a partnership with the Liquor Control Board of Ontario.
The overseas foray comes hot on the heels of Wrexham Lager’s expansion into the US, Australian, Scandinavian, Northern Ireland, and Hungarian markets over the past 12 months.
“Expanding into Canada is a proud moment for the brand,” said Jon Roberts, interim CEO of The Wrexham Lager Beer Co.
“With our products now available in Ontario and British Columbia, Canadian customers now get to experience a taste of our premium lager. It’s another milestone for the team and our global success demonstrates the appetite for genuine and authentic lager.”
The once-dormant beer brand, which dates back to 1882, was mothballed by previous owner Carlsberg in 2000, before being revived in 2011 by current part-owners the Roberts family.
It has since benefited from the halo effect of Deadpool star Reynolds and fellow actor McElhenney’s ownership from 2020 of Wrexham AFC, which has been chronicled in hit TV show Welcome to Wrexham since 2022.
Reynolds and McElhenney then further deepened their connection with the north Wales city last October when they became majority owners of the brewer.
Wrexham Lager claims to be the oldest lager-producing brewery in Great Britain. It makes a 5% abv Wrexham Lager Export and a 4.6% abv Pilsener, alongside its flagship, namesake 4% abv Wrexham Lager.
