Sainsbury’s has kicked off its seasonal recruitment campaign with the ambition of hiring 17,500 additional staff ahead of the Christmas period.
The seasonal staff will fulfil demand for roles across Sainsbury’s stores and warehouses, as well as Argos stores and its online fulfilment operations.
The supermarket said it would be offering colleagues free food during shifts over the festive period, as well as an uncapped colleague discount of 10% at Sainsbury’s and Argos, rising to 15% every Friday and Saturday at Sainsbury’s.
The temporary workers will be employed on fixed-term contracts ranging from four to 12 weeks.
Christmas is always a special time for our customers and colleagues and our seasonal team members help make it happen,” said Sainsbury’s chief retail, logistics and supply chain officer Tracey Clements.
“We look forward to welcoming thousands of new colleagues who will help us deliver great-tasting festive food, brilliant service and fantastic value across our stores, fulfilment centres and delivery operations.
“Whether someone is joining us for the first time or returning for another Christmas, they’ll play an important role in helping customers celebrate.”
The recruitment drive includes Argos, as Sainsbury’s will retain ownership of the general merchandise retailer until early next year. Sainsbury’s confirmed in July that it was selling Argos for more than £120m to a newly established company called Swift formed by retail heavyweights Richard Pennycook, Trevor Strain and Matt Truman.
Swift is expected to complete the transfer of ownership of Argos in February 2027, with full operational and corporate separation to be finalised by February 2029.
