Family shopping in Sainsburys 2

Sainsbury’s has launched an AI-powered feature on its app, which allows shoppers to build online baskets by taking photos of handwritten lists or entering prompts like ‘ingredients for a spaghetti bolognese’.

Shoppers can also interact with the new ‘Smartlists’ tool with spoken prompts.

“We know our customers are busy and want shopping to feel simple, joyful and easy to fit around their lives,” said Ben Edge, director of product at Sainsbury’s.

“Smartlists is designed to take the effort out of creating and buying a shopping list, whether customers are typing, speaking or taking a picture of what they need,” he added.

The feature is part of a wider Sainsbury’s app upgrade, which pulls together online grocery orders, the supermarket’s rapid delivery service Chop Chop, Smartlists, in-store SmartShop and “enhanced Nectar experiences”.

The consolidation “means customers can access more of Sainsbury’s services through a single app, without needing to switch”, the supermarket said. It gave its standalone Chop Chop app the chop, in February, after close to a decade.

“By bringing more of our services together in one app, we’re making it easier for customers to plan their shop, build their basket and find products in store, however and whenever they choose to shop with us,” Edge added.

The upgraded app also features a built-in ‘Product Finder’ helping shoppers locate their listed products in their local supermarket. This makes shopping “smoother and easier for customers”, Sainsbury’s said, while “allowing colleagues to spend more time on valuable customer support”.
