Bone broth challenger Spring has closed a six-figure funding round as it seeks to accelerate growth in the on-trend category.
The brand makes a range of premium, small-batch, all-natural bone broths and soups using ingredients sourced from high-welfare UK farms.
It has gained listings at Marks & Spencer, Ocado, Whole Foods Market and Fortnum & Mason, alongside distribution across 200-plus independent food stores. Spring also sells online DTC and at farmers’ markets.
Revenues closed in on £1m in 2024, growing 43% year on year to £830k.
Founder and MD Tom Pryor, who launched Spring seven years ago, said demand across retail, wholesale and DTC was outpacing what the business can currently produce at its Essex factory.
London-based fresh product wholesaler Rushton’s, which is owned by Essex-headquartered fruit & veg grower S Thorogood & Sons, led the latest equity raise in Spring, investing £250k in the bone broth manufacturer, with MD Andrew Thorogood joining the board.
A further £121k was raised from existing shareholders and 83 crowd investors as part of a campaign on Crowdcube.
“The past year has been exceptionally strong for Spring with meaningful organic growth across every major channel, particularly in M&S, DTC and our Christmas turkey bone broth products manufactured for third parties,” Pryor said.
“Our revenue for the past four months of 2025 represents 80% of our entire 2023 revenue, signalling a significant uplift in velocity, and we have strengthened our supply chain working with new farms.
“With demand rising sharply across retail, wholesale and DTC, Spring has now reached full capacity at its existing site. Moving to a new site and upgrading productivity and efficiency will unlock new growth opportunities and significantly improve unit economics, both immediately and as we scale.”
Premium bone broth has well and truly hit the mainstream in UK retail, with Freja this year adding a new lineup designed for everyday cooking. It follows Borough Broth Company securing a £7.5m investment by selling a minority stake to PE house Piper, and Hunter & Gather expanding its offering with a powdered bone broth last year.
Bone broth has even made it to the pet wellness category as the likes of Pooch & Mutt and Applaws launched products.
