Sales of pot snacks, seafood sauces and ready meals all took a hit in the week after Sudan 1 hit the headlines, according to exclusive research conducted by ACNielsen for The Grocer. However, it is not clear whether the slump proves consumers had shunned affected categories or because products were not available following recalls.
In the week ending February 26, sales of seafood sauce in grocery multiples and impulse channels dived 45% on the previous week and 50% on the same week in the previous year, said an ACNielsen spokeswoman. Chilled ready meals slumped 6.9% in the week to February 26 (week on week) and were down 5.6% on the corresponding week last year, she said.
Surprisingly, sales of Worcester sauce fell just 0.8% in the week to February 26, although this may reflect the fact it is not a frequently purchased item and a week’s data was not statistically significant.
Snack pots were down 14.2% on the previous week and 19.6% on the same period last year, which a spokesman for Pot Noodle maker Unilever described as “hugely frustrating”.
