Morrisons has become the latest supermarket to put its weight behind local community spaces, with the launch of a new £1m fund.
Through its Connecting Communities programme, the Bradford supermarket will make grants of up to £20,000 available to charities for improvements in their community spaces.
The funding is intended for “capital improvements”. It could include a youth club buying new equipment, a community centre that hosts groups for the elderly installing new heating, or a hospice decorating communal areas.
“Thriving communities are built on the strength of their shared spaces but funding to sustain them is in short supply,” said David Scott, chair of the Morrisons Foundation.
“Our new Connecting Communities grants will breathe new life into community facilities that bring people together and provide important local services.”
It is the latest initiative from the supermarket’s charitable arm, The Morrisons Foundation, which has donated nearly £50m in community grants since 2015.
“Our new Connecting Communities fund is designed to unlock the potential of local neighbourhoods facilities,” said Joseph Clark-Bland, Morrisons charity and community manager.
“We know many charities providing vital services in our communities are struggling. We want to help ensure they remain open and accessible.”
It follows Asda’s launch in 2024 of its Local Spaces Community Fund, which has seen the supermarket donate more than £1m to 73 separate projects across the UK over the past year.
