Taylors has launched Half Caff to tap growing demand for lower-caffeine coffee.
The NPD, which has landed exclusively in Sainsbury’s stores, is made from a blend of half-caffeinated and half-decaffeinated speciality-grade arabica coffees (rsp: £5.75/200g).
The coffee promises a medium roast and a “smooth, silky profile”. Drinkers could expect “notes of hazelnut, butterscotch and malt”, said Taylors.
“We’re seeing more consumers become conscious of their caffeine intake, while still wanting great-tasting coffee they can enjoy throughout the day,” said Chloe Weekes, assistant brand manager at Taylors. “Half Caff has been carefully crafted to offer that balance, giving coffee lovers a lighter-caffeine option without compromising on the quality and flavour they expect from Taylors.
“Drawing on our expertise in both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, Half Caff represents a natural extension of the Taylors range and an exciting step into a growing area of consumer demand.”
Tim Medley, coffee quality specialist at Taylors, added: “For our Half Caff we have combined naturally processed decaf coffees from Mexico with caffeinated coffees from Latin America – all sourced through suppliers with whom we’ve built long-standing relationships.
“The result is a medium roast with a lovely gentle, nutty and sweet flavour profile.”
Taylors is not the first coffee supplier to introduce a reduced-caffeine coffee to its lineup. In March, Union Coffee debuted its own Half Caff blend, featuring speciality beans from Columbia and decaffeinated speciality beans from Peru.
In 2024, TrueStart launched Lightly Caffeinated, billed as a first-to-market lightly caffeinated instant coffee. It contains 35mg of caffeine per portion, slightly over a third of that of TrueStart’s Super Blend.
