Tesco is cutting 380 jobs as it phases out its centralised bakery operation and transitions to a new in‑store bakery model.
The move was announced by UK CEO Aswin Prasad who said the company would try to find roles for as many as possible of those impacted.
Tesco said it had briefed colleagues on a series of changes across the business, including updates to replenishment schedules and the removal of its centralised bakery operation. New in‑store bakeries are being rolled out to around 100 Express stores, while the retailer is also investing in its F&F Clothing departments in a number of stores “to further improve the customer experience”.
The retailer said the combined changes would result in around 380 roles being removed, but stressed that it currently had 1,500 vacancies across the business.
“Any decision that impacts our colleagues is a difficult one to make,” said Prasad. “However, these changes are necessary to enable us to continue to win with customers, and offer them the unrivalled value, quality and service they expect from us.
“Our priority is always to support impacted colleagues, and we will do everything we can to help them find alternative roles within our business. Today we have around 1,500 vacancies across retail and distribution.”
Meanwhile, Tesco said it would begin consultation in the coming weeks on the closure of its Hinckley distribution centre. The closure was first announced last year as part of wider growth plans to invest in a new distribution centre in the area. Tesco said all impacted staff would be offered roles at the new site.
