Tesco’s partnership with food waste app Olio has reached the landmark of rescuing 100 million meals since it launched in 2019, the charity has revealed.
The supermarket, which is among retailers working with Olio through its Food Waste Heroes Programme, has seen 3,200 Tesco stores take part in its work, on top of its primary charity partnership with food redistribution partner Felix.
Tesco initially began a trial with Olio across 250 stores in which surplus food levels were high. At the time there was a shortage of what was then FareShare charities available.
In 2020, Tesco rolled out Olio across its stores nationally.
“As the first UK retailer to roll out Olio collections nationally, we’re incredibly proud to have hit this impressive milestone with Tesco,” said Tessa Clarke, CEO and co-founder of Olio.
“One hundred million meals is all the more powerful when we account for the benefits that number represents in terms of mental, physical and financial wellbeing for our community. It’s a privilege to work with national retailers like Tesco who are so committed to embedding social and environmental impact across their operations.”
Olio claims that overall the social impact it has created since launching in 2015 – spanning improved mental wellbeing, volunteering and physical activity – is now valued at more than £1.1 bn, with £380m of that generated in 2025 alone.
