The Tofoo Co has announced the relaunch of its tempeh with a new recipe made exclusively in the UK.
The relaunched line will be made exclusively in the UK at the brand’s Yorkshire production site, in a first for UK mainstream grocery retail, the brand has claimed.
The Naked Tempeh (rsp: £2.75) is crafted from sustainably sourced, GM-free and organic soyabeans, along with three other ingredients: live culture, water and apple cider vinegar.
The plant-based product is high in fibre and contains 44g of protein per pack.
The brand said the recipe has a nuttier taste, resulting in a more versatile product without the acidic profile normally associated with tempeh, something the brand said put off a lot of consumers.
“Innovation has always been core to the Tofoo brand, and we’re proud to be the first to produce UK-made tempeh for UK grocery, following in the footsteps of our market-leading UK-made tofu,” said Tofoo MD David Knibbs.
“Consumers are increasingly wanting products that are locally produced and, in a category where many tempeh products are sourced from Europe, our UK-made tempeh offers a more sustainable solution while delivering better flavour for the consumer.”
The pack has also been redesigned to align with the brand’s Naked Tofu product.
The packaging also includes a “made in the UK” badge on front of pack.
The new recipe tempeh will launch into retail in May with stockists including Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose and Ocado.
