Omami Chickpea Tofu is made from chickpeas instead of the soy beans found in traditional tofu

This has announced the launch of the UK’s first chickpea-based tofu available in mainstream supermarkets.

Omami Chickpea Tofu (rsp: £2.95/200g) is made from chickpeas instead of the soy beans found in traditional tofu.

It is “crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside” and will be launched into Sainsbury’s and Ocado from 24 September, with other supermarkets following in October.

It is made with more than 70% chickpeas and is naturally low in saturated fat and high in protein, with 14g-15g per 100g.

The range comprises two pre-seasoned flavours: Lightly Seasoned and Chilli Spiced.

The Lightly Seasoned block is marinated with salt and black pepper and can be used for any cuisine.

Meanwhile, the Chilli Spiced block has a chilli marinade, which the brand said would add an “exciting kick” to Asian and Mexican-inspired meals.

“This is going to be the best tofu on the market, game-changing taste and next-level texture,” said Mark Cuddigan, CEO at This. “We’re obsessed at This with making plant-based food that tastes delicious and delivers on nutrition too.

“Our new chickpea based tofu does exactly that and will hopefully change the way people think about tofu. Plus, there’s also zero fuss – no marinating, no prep, no blandness. Just chop, cook, and enjoy.”

The launch is in partnership with German food startup Omami and has combined their shared expertise in manufacturing plant-based ingredients and a “joint obsession with making delicious products”.

“We’re thrilled about this partnership with This,” said Christina Hammerschmid, CEO at Omami. “It’s a perfect match of two innovative companies that share the same vision – revolutionising the plant-based market by creating products that truly excite consumers with exceptional taste and nutrition.

“We’re delighted that people in Britain will soon be cooking and enjoying omami’s deliciously marinated chickpea tofu.”

The launch comes following the brand’s launch of This Isn’t Beef Pastrami, This Is Super Veg Protein Bites and This Is Super Superfood Breaded Pieces, announced last week.
