A Waitrose supermarket in Hove has been closed for four days, with no sign yet of when it will reopen, after a fire broke out on Tuesday morning.
The fire started in the early hours of Tuesday in a warehouse chiller while the supermarket was closed, according to Waitrose. It was “quickly contained thanks to the swift action of the fire service and our partners, to whom we’re incredibly grateful”, said a spokesperson.
There are no reported casualties.
Waitrose has said it is investigating the cause and will reopen the store as soon as it is safe, but given no indication of when that will be.
Customers who use the store were sent a message by Waitrose yesterday saying: “We wanted to let you know that Waitrose Hove is temporarily closed following a fire. We’re working on getting it open again as soon as we can, and will be in touch with an update when we know more. In the meantime, you can shop at our stores in Brighton and Southwick.”
The closure heading into the weekend coincides with the arrival of the latest heatwave to hit the UK, meaning the 29,000 sq ft store stands to lose out on a potential boost from both the warm weather and World Cup.
The Met Office has forecast temperatures will reach as high as 34°C on Monday and Tuesday next week, in a heatwave developing over the weekend. An Amber extreme heat warning has been issued for much of southern England.
