Morrisons will be giving away ‘Half Time Oranges’ on England and Scotland matchdays during the Fifa World Cup.
The initiative serves as a nod to the tradition of eating orange slices at half time and builds on the retailer’s long-standing free fresh fruit programme for children, which has been in place since 2018.
Although targeted at children, the oranges will be available for all customers at Morrisons stores nationwide (excluding Morrisons Dailys) starting Sunday 14 June, when Scotland takes on Haiti at Boston Stadium.
The offer will run over the course of England and Scotland group stage games with fruit available nationwide on Scotland match days (14, 19 and 24 June) and England match days (17, 23 and 27 June), whilst stocks last.
Customers in Wales will also have the opportunity to pick up a free fruit as usual.
“Encouraging children to enjoy fresh fruit has long been important to us at Morrisons, and orange slices are such a nostalgic part of football culture,” said Jacob Uren, senior citrus trader at Morrisons. “We hope our free oranges help keep little fans refreshed, energised and ready to cheer on England and Scotland this summer.”
A Morrisons spokeswoman said the retailer did not plan to extend the giveaway beyond the group stage.
It comes as the Food Foundation’s Broken Plate Report revealed households with children in the lowest 20% of incomes are finding it increasingly difficult to feed their families nutritious food.
