Dija has a presence in the UK, France and Spain

On-demand rapid grocer Gopuff is to acquire Dija to accelerate its expansion into Europe.

Dija was established late last year by former Deliveroo executives Alberto Menolascina and Yusuf Saban and launched in London in March, initially delivering groceries direct to customers within 15 minutes from four dark store hubs. Within weeks of launching, Dija snapped up Cambridge-based 15-minute snack delivery startup Genie, and has since established operations in Paris, Madrid and Valencia.

US-founded Gopuff – which is seeking to be “the world’s go-to solution for immediate needs” – said the deal would give it “immediate presence” in France and Spain and offer “further densification” in the UK.

The deal comes just months after Gopuff acquired Fancy, a rapid delivery platform providing consumers with groceries and essentials in 30 minutes. Last week, Gopuff secured $1bn in new funding, valuing the business at $15bn.

The two acquisitions will give Gopuff around 40 micro-fulfilment centres and 200 employees across Europe. The company said there were “additional plans for continued, rapid expansion”.

“Combining Dija’s team of industry veterans, extensive infrastructure and local expertise will complement Gopuff’s proprietary technology and unique customer experience, and advance our ability to scale rapidly as we create a leading platform in Europe,” said Daniel Folkman, Gopuff SVP of business.

“Together, we will continue to innovate and define the instant needs economy across Europe and bring the category to more customers in the region,” Folkman added.

In the “near term” Dija will continue to operate under its current branding, although this may change as the companies “create an integration plan to enhance the customer experience across Europe and the UK”.
