PizzaExpress is launching an updated version of its smartphone app, with new features and the offer of a free pizza with every download.

The app will let customers find their nearest restaurant, book a table and pay their bill using their phone.

Additional features are to be added throughout the year, starting with a click-and-collect order function in late spring.

Augmented reality features are due to follow this summer. The technology allows products to be superimposed over a user’s real-world view through their device, for example showing how furniture might look in their home. PizzaExpress didn’t elaborate on the capabilities it would bring to its app.

The app, including the free pizza offer, is due to be downloadable from iTunes and Google Play, for iPhone, Google and Android users, from 27 March.

Existing PizzaExpress app users will be able to update to the new one.

Six hours after downloading or updating, customers will get a code to claim a single free Classic or Leggera base pizza. It must be claimed within six weeks on any day except Fridays and Saturdays.

“The pay-at-table function is perfect for those who are short on time,” said PizzaExpress senior marketing manager Timothy Love.

“By listening to our customers, we’ve understood what’s important to them and are introducing a more personalised service, including bespoke rewards. We are very excited about new initiatives we’ll be unveiling later this year and we’re looking forward to a strong launch.”
