Chop Chop launched in Brighton and Bristol on 14 May

Sainsbury’s is rolling out its rapid bike delivery service Chop Chop to cities outside London for the first time.

Once the 50-store rollout to 20 cities is completed, about 3.2 million households will be able to have groceries delivered to their door within an hour.

Sainsbury’s said the expansion would support efforts to feed the nation and help meet unprecedented demand for home deliveries.

Chop Chop launched in Brighton and Bristol on 14 May, with Manchester and Reading, as well as Richmond, Morden, Charlton and Harringay in Greater London, to follow next week. By mid-June, a total of 50 stores will offer shoppers the service.

Customers can order up to 20 Sainsbury’s products from a tailored range of about 3,000 essential grocery and household items via the app.

Sainsbury’s relaunched the Chop Chop service in April across London to meet rocketing demand for delivered groceries during the coronavirus lockdown, using closed convenience stores as dark locations to pick products and deliver to a three-mile radius.

Lessons and customer feedback from the trial had been used to improve the service further as the offer expanded to supermarkets in cities across the country, the retailer added.

The supermarket has more than doubled the number of customer orders it can fulfil from these initial stores, with delivery slots typically all booked by 10am. By bringing the offer to 50 stores across the country, Sainsbury’s will increase capacity by a further 400%.

The move will support Sainsbury’s efforts to increase the total number of online delivery slots for its groceries online service to 600,000 per week. Sainsbury’s is continuing to prioritise elderly, disabled and vulnerable customers for its online delivery slots.

“We are doing everything we can to feed the nation and offer our customers quick, convenient and safe ways to get their groceries,” said chief digital officer Clodagh Moriarty.

“Demand for home grocery deliveries has never been higher and we have been receiving great feedback for Chop Chop, with customers really valuing the speed and convenience it brings. By rolling Chop Chop out to 50 stores in 20 cities across the country, even more customers can get what they need delivered to their door.”
