Booths is to axe 100 jobs as part of a plan to close two stores and restructure in-store management.
The Northern supermarket chain said it planned to close stores in Ansdell and Marton later this year. It also wants to replace heads of department and assistant manager roles with three management positions with “greater accountability and responsibility”.
It comes as the retailer prepares to open three new stores this year. It also opened a new store, in Hale Barns, this month.
“The customer experience is at the heart of what we do, and we’re focusing on the things that matter most to our customers, service, availability and quality,” said retail director Paul Minett.
“To support this, that means a simplified and more accountable management structure, trading from an estate of profitable, vibrant stores. The difficult and tough decisions that we make now will ensure that Booths continues to have a bright and profitable future for generations to come.”
Booths added that the majority of staff at its Ansdell and Marton stores would transfer to other stores.
The news comes on the same day Sainsbury’s also announced a shake-up of in-store roles, which could result in the loss of 800 jobs.
