McColl’s has recruited Booker’s former head of buying into a newly created role of the same name.

It is understood the appointment of Greg Goodwin will enable trading director Peter Miller to focus on developing opportunities that have arisen through the convenience retail chain’s new partnership with Morrisons.

Goodwin, who started this week and has a wealth of experience in senior buying roles, will manage the day-to-day activities of the McColl’s trading team and report into Miller.

He will be responsible for category business plans, joint business plans with the chain’s suppliers and its promotional programme. He is expected to conduct full category reviews over the coming months.

Prior to joining Booker, Goodwin spent two years and seven months at Nisa working in head of trading positions.

He had previously notched up almost seven-and-a-half years working for Tesco in a number of buying manager and category buying manager roles spanning grocery, spirits, healthcare and pigmeat before eventually departing as category commercial manager for fish and counters.

“I’ve been impressed with the transformation McColl’s has been through in the last few years and I’m really looking forward to supporting Peter and the team,” Goodwin told The Grocer.

“Through the new wholesale supply partnership and by working closely with branded suppliers, the business has a great opportunity to deliver a best-in-class convenience offer to UK neighbourhoods.”

Goodwin will work alongside Peter Taylor, who is expected to become the main interface with Morrisons, leading the work on range, pricing and Safeway.
