‘Over 700’ of around 900 stores remained open, said Poundland MD Barry Williams

Poundland has introduced a raft of added benefits for staff as a thank you for their work in the coronavirus pandemic, including an extra week’s annual holiday.

On top of the added week, the variety discounter has committed to staying closed on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, to give staff more time with their families.

For warehouse staff, the retailer has set up shops on site to help them easily access essentials goods.

Staff discounts have also been doubled.

Some of the new benefits were revealed by Poundland MD Barry Williams in a video posted on social media.

“Sometimes just saying thank you isn’t enough, so we’re doing a lot to support our colleagues as well,” he said.

“Whether that’s doubling the discount on all the products they can buy from us through our colleague discount scheme, providing extra holiday - all colleagues are getting an extra week’s holiday because of the service they’ve provided - an extended break to spend with their families and loved ones at Christmas… It really is important that we thank them for everything they’re doing.”

Williams said “over 700” stores remained open in the lockdown.

At the end of March, Poundland announced 100 stores were to temporarily close leaving eight out of 10 open.

The temporary closures have been put down to pressure from shopping centre landlords, falling footfall and some stores being near to other branches which continue trading.
