Asda hit back against recent pressure from Tesco to claim an emphatic pricing win this week.
Having lost out to Tesco two weeks ago and only narrowly winning last week, at £59.59 Asda was more than a fiver cheaper than Tesco.
The figures bear out the convincing nature of Asda’s win as it offered the lowest price for 22 of the 33 items on our shopping list. Eleven of these were exclusively cheaper than any of its rivals. These products included the baking potatoes, jam and Warburtons crumpets.
Asda was also cheaper than any of the other main supermarkets for a two-litre bottle of Pepsi (£1.86) following the introduction of the Soft Drinks Industry Levy this month. Asda had 12 products on deal compared with just seven at Tesco and Morrisons, six at Waitrose and four at Sainsbury’s.
Despite the win, Asda still had to offer our mystery shopper a voucher worth £1.86 off her next shop as part of the Asda Price Guarantee.
Even with the impact of its Brand Guarantee, Tesco struggled to close the gap. Our shopper had £2.92 wiped off her bill at the checkout, which would have been £3.21 had it not been for out of stock Soreen and Pepsi. However, this would only have brought its total down to £61.52, still £1.93 more expensive than Asda.
Sainsbury’s claimed third, though at £66.51 it was £6.92 more expensive than Asda. It offered the lowest price for seven items but was exclusively cheapest on one - the Dolmio.
Morrisons was even further off the pace. At £66.64 it was £7.05 pricier than Asda. Much of this can be put down to it being the only retailer without a deal on the Absolut Vodka, which meant it was charging £5 more than Asda for a 70cl bottle.
At £69.03, Waitrose came in just shy of a tenner more expensive than Asda.
