Peperami Pastry Rolls

Who: Peperami Snacks

What: Puff pastry rolls stuffed with smoked pork salami sausage

Where: Chiller

How much: £2.50/3x42g

Why: This year has seen a slew of new launches from Jack Links’ meat snack Peperami, including a Peperami & Cheese Snack Box and Pep’d Up, the brand’s first foray into chicken. These new pastry rolls are designed to be eaten hot or cold, and are billed as “providing shoppers with a bigger eat in an easy, on-the-go format”. The recent swathe of NPD comes after a slow 2018 for the brand - Peperami added just 0.5% to its value last year, hitting £63.1m, and volumes fell by 3.2% [Nielsen 52 w/e 29 December 2018].

Consumer verdict: Shoppers were intrigued by the concept, calling it an “exciting new idea”. However, many were disappointed after cooking the rolls, calling the sausage “hard and chewy” when contrasted with the “light and flaky” puff pastry. Some thought it was a good idea for children, but it took flak for being “greasy”, “chewy” and “unhealthy”.
