The changes will affect a total of 11 SKUs

Sainsbury’s has switched its entire own-label coffee pod range from plastic to fully recyclable aluminium.

The new packaging will help save over 10 million pieces of plastic each year, the supermarket said. The changes will affect a total of 11 SKUs, including Taste The Difference Signature Light Roast, Espresso and Lungo coffee pods.

Sainsbury’s has also reduced the amount of cardboard across the range by over 20% through changes to the box packaging, as well as the cases the products are transported in.

The moves follow a trial last year in which Sainsbury’s transitioned some of its own-label coffee pods packaging from plastic to aluminium to help customers recycle their pods at home.

Shoppers only need to empty the aluminium pods and rinse them before placing them in their usual kerbside recycling.

Sainsbury’s also sells a device that ensures the coffee is properly separated from the pods before recycling, but it said it was “not essential”.

The move is the latest in a string of plastic reductions as part of the retailer’s pledge to halve its own-brand plastic packaging by 2025.
