Tesco said ninety per cent of its Scan as you Shop customers checked out using card payment

Tesco has angered some customers by announcing it is stopping cash payments on its Scan as you Shop service, from next week.

The supermarket giant said that from 13 January, checkouts for the service would only accept cards.

Some customers have reacted angrily to the changes, which Tesco has been flagging up on receipts in the past few days.

One shopper tweeted: “I suggest bosses that took the decision to stop cash payments of scan as you go RE-THINK this, as a lot of elderly, disabled and families use this as they’re on a tight budget therefore pay cash!!! Doing this would discriminate against cash paying people!!”

Another added: “If you want to get out fast you can’t pay cash. This is why I use Tesco. I only ever pay cash. Self service is always queuing. Might as well go to Morrisons save money and spend the same time at the till Thanks.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Ninety per cent of our Scan as you Shop customers check out using card payment, so to make it easier and faster for customers, the Scan as you Shop tills at most of our larger stores will take card payments only, from 13 January.

“The small number of Scan as you Shop customers who prefer to pay by cash can still do that at any self-service or main checkouts, where colleagues will be more than happy to help.”
