Retail tinned tuna prices are set to rise, say analysts.

The failure of skipjack catches in all three oceans has led the market into its worst period for over 30 years.

Factories in Thailand, Africa and the Indian Ocean have closed for days due to lack of fish. Concerns will be raised about overfishing. But most operators believe current difficulties are a result of a natural occurrence - a coincidence of the oceans failing at the same time.

Prices early in the year did not reflect the genuine difficulties in supply, although this is now being reversed with a vengeance. Costs are $1,200 per tonne with retail prices based on notional fish costs of $800/850 per tonne.
