The CMA has just published its provisional findings on the Sainsbury’s-Asda merger - is that something you are discussing with your colleagues? We all keep an eye on what is going on, but we are more focused on our own colleagues and making sure we are consistently delivering for our customers.

You’ve come through the ranks at Tesco from the shop floor. Does this help you as a store manager? Definitely. Colleagues know you have been where they are and respect that. It’s also really important to me that we develop more colleagues in the same way. Last year two of our colleagues became store managers and another took up a senior leadership role.

The store got full marks for availability. What’s your secret? The key for us is having a great mix of some experienced people who have been with the store since it opened as well as some really energetic young people. They all share the same desire to provide a great consistent experience for our customers whenever they come in.

Has the store had any exciting changes recently? It has gone through two major extensions over the years but the most recent change came in October when we had a new F&F Clothing department installed. It looks great with low-level displays and mannequins.

Tesco recently announced changes to its in-store counters. Is this affecting your store? Yes, the changes have been well-documented. There is no doubt that the way customers are shopping has changed in recent years and a lot of that is around looking for that speed of shop. Our main focus is to look after our colleagues as best we can.

How did Valentine’s Day go? We did really well. As it was right in the middle of the working week there were a lot of last-minute purchases. I don’t mean to stereotype but it was typically more men coming in the day before and indeed the day itself.
