Union bosses have warned they will have “no choice” but to ballot workers on strike action if Asda distribution centre staff turn down the latest pay offer from the Issa brothers.

The GMB yesterday began a ballot of 8,000 staff on whether to accept a revised pay offer from the supermarket giant.

Before Christmas, 94% of GMB members indicatied they were prepared to take strike action after accusing Asda of failing to make a “meaningful offer”.

The latest offer has seen Asda offer base rate increases to warehouse and clerical staff ranging from 4.98% to 6.10% and 6.49% to 7.53% for transport staff. “Asda’s distribution workers have put pressure on bosses to get an improved pay offer.”

“It is now up to them if they are willing to accept it,” said GMB national officer Nadine Houghton. “If they turn this pay offer down, we will have no choice but to move to a formal strike ballot.”

Asda said it had made a “fair, competitive and sustainable pay offer”.
