Asda claimed its first victory in a month with a basket that was 3.3% cheaper than its nearest rival.
Six price cuts, including a half-price Colgate toothbrush, reduced its total by 5.5% to make it this week’s second-deepest discounter.
There was no one item that made a big difference – the most it undercut anyone by was 54p on watermelon. In total, Asda’s £70.37 basket was cheapest for 23 products and exclusively so for 10 of those. It was also either joint or exclusively cheapest for every ingredient for our vegetarian Mexican night. The fajita kit, Vegemince, green pepper, lettuce, soured cream and grated cheese totalled £11.10 at Asda, a 37p saving versus Tesco.
Morrisons (£72.77) was its closest challenger. Its basket included the deepest price cuts at 7.5% and the cheapest Kleenex tissues, Petits Filous yoghurts and sweetcorn cobettes. Morrisons also did the most to fight inflation: its basket cost 2.7% less than last month and 0.1% more than a year ago.
Tesco (£74.44) matched 10 cheapest SKUs and was exclusively cheapest on a further three, most notably the gammon steaks where a Clubcard promotion made it 98p cheaper than Asda. It was unlucky with other promo timings, however, as the San Pellegrino had been on a similar deal recently. Asda was 5.5% cheaper.
Sainsbury’s (£76.55) was further off the pace, costing 8.8% more than Asda. A Nectar promo on strawberries accounted for its only exclusively cheapest SKU. At 2.4% it offered the lowest promotional savings, while its 5.3% year-on-year increase was the steepest.
Waitrose was uncompetitive on price as usual. Its only lowest priced item was the Warburtons gluten-free pittas, while it matched San Pellegrino and Fuel10K cereal thanks to promotions. Its £85.72 basket cost 21.8% more than Asda’s.
