Morrisons scrapes the win with just 15p lead on Tesco

Morrisons scraped the win in a very tight three-way competition this week.

At £76.75, Morrisons was just 15p cheaper than Tesco (£76.90) and 87p cheaper than Asda (£77.62). Morrisons was also the only supermarket to reduce its total on last year (by 1.2%).

Our winner sold the cheapest ingredients for a vegan burger. Linda McCartney’s frozen quarter pounders, white baps, Violife cheese alternative slices, Hellmann’s Plant Based Mayo, iceberg lettuce and red onion totalled £9.65 at Morrisons, while the same items cost more than £10 everywhere else.

Pro-rating for multibuys (Morrisons had seven) would reduce its total to £71.94 and extend its lead to a comfortable £1.26 over Tesco’s £73.20.

Tesco matched Morrisons for discounts, both knocking 10.1% off their totals. At Tesco that included Costa ground coffee, which was more than £1 cheaper for Clubcard members, and McVitie’s Penguins, which cost at least twice as much anywhere else.

In third place, Asda missed out largely because Morrisons and Tesco had a £2 promotion for the Innocent smoothie. Asda had run the same promotion until 1 July. It had eight exclusively cheapest SKUs, including a £1 cantaloupe melon and £1 Fab ice lollies.

Sainsbury’s took its foot off the pedal. At £80.96 its basket cost 4.9% more than a week ago and 7.8% more than last year. Its only two exclusively cheapest items were the own-label houmous and lamb chops, on a Nectar promotion. It was 5.5% pricier than Morrisons.

Waitrose trailed behind. At £93.32 its basket cost 21.6% more than Morrisons’. Its lamb chops cost £4.70 more than anywhere else, but that is in Waitrose’s gift as the only retailer to guarantee all its own-label lamb is British and higher welfare.
